Background / Guidance: Commercial, institutional, and residential buildings larger than 50,000 square feet may be granted an exemption from complying with the
Chicago Energy Rating System requirements if they do not receive an ENERGY STAR score or energy use intensity (EUI) from the benchmarking tool for technical reasons. Some property types are not eligible for an ENERGY STAR score, and this is NOT a valid reason for an exemption. However, almost all buildings that have benchmarked correctly should receive an EUI, except in extremely rare cases. An exemption may also be granted if the building owner is unable to make energy efficiency improvements due to the building’s infrastructure limitations, including but not limited to, the covered building’s inability to update equipment due to limited space, or other technical reasons acceptable to the City. These exemptions are intended for rare and unusual circumstances.
Instructions: Please use this form if you believe that your building should receive an exemption from complying with the Chicago Energy Rating System this year. This is a
one year, temporary exemption. If you receive this exemption, you ARE still required to benchmark and report energy use annually, and to verify the data once every three years. However, your building will not receive a Chicago Energy Rating based on your benchmarking results.
This form should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Within 5-10 business days, you will receive an email confirmation and/or any follow-up questions about your request.
